My first experience seeing
Jenny Holzer's work was back in 2005 when I was in London on business. I had the fortune of staying a few extra days and went to the Tate Modern where her simple and straightforward display was set up in a large room. Stood there for a good 20 minutes reading all of the sayings, and I wondered where I could see more of them.
Now ten years later, I had occasion to run into Jenny's work once again at Dismaland, and it again piqued my curiosity. So I decided to make a web page that re-creates her signage. Found a 5x7 LED font, sampled the color from the live sign at Dismaland in Weston-super-Mare, wrote a bit of Javascript to tie things together, and the result is what you see here ... all of Jenny's early work, plus some newer sayings. From this pause screen you can choose the sequence of Truisms -- just the original truisms from the broadsheeet that started it all back in 1977, or the selection shown in the
Tate Modern exhibit. Or perhaps you fancy the selection from the Dismaland sign. Maybe the 52 most popular ones as identified by visitors to a twitter feed someone had set up in her name. (It wasn't officially sanctioned by her, but she didn't seem upset that it was going on.)
I hope this page will keep Jenny's work alive for generations to come, and be a place of conversation.
